What is an M3U playlist?
M3U is the plain-text playlist format every IPTV player reads. Here is what it is, what is inside one, and why you should care.
M3U (MPEG URL) is a plain-text playlist format originally designed for MP3 files in the late 1990s. For IPTV, it's the universal way to list streaming URLs with channel names, logos, and categories — the lingua franca that every player on every platform understands.
What an M3U file looks like
A minimum M3U is just URLs. A practical IPTV M3U uses the #EXTINF extension to add metadata:
#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="sky1.uk" tvg-logo="..." group-title="UK",Sky One
http://host.com:8080/live/user/pass/101.m3u8
Why you care
- Portability — every IPTV player on every platform reads M3U. If you ever lose access to a specific Xtream Codes API, a raw M3U URL still works.
- Editability — you can open an .m3u in any text editor and remove channels, change names, or re-organise groups.
- Transparency — inspecting the file shows you exactly what the provider is delivering.
